In today’s society, mental health is becoming a more prevalent illness with 1 in 4 people in the UK experiencing a mental health issue each year. With technology advancing by the second coupled with an increase in social media users, this has contributed to growing pressures for individuals to keep up to pace with the modern world, an ever-increasing burden for people to represent their everyday life in picture-perfect format as well as expectations to achieve certain milestones by a certain age, for example buying a house, driving, holding a particular job role . On World Mental Health Day we take a look at how these factors can contribute to a person’s negative mental health and what impact this has carried into the workplace?

The World Mental Health Foundation outline that approximately 1 in 7 people experience mental health problems in the workplace and it is suggested that 12.7% of all sickness absence days in the UK occur because of mental health problems. The World Mental Health Foundation also suggests that mental health support in the workplace can save UK businesses up to £8 billion a year.

One of the main outlined causes of mental health issues is stress, a symptom that if not supported in the right working environment can decline quickly. There are a number of ways stress can be reduced in the workplace such as having weekly communication with your manager regarding any issues/concerns you may have, completing a risk assessment of the workplace to see what potential psychological factors there may be and find out what your organisation offers already in terms of support inside and outside the workplace to help support with mental health.
